After sending back a Yamaha 663 because it would not pass thru my cable DVR, I decided to try the Denon AVR-1909.It is pricey compared to the Onkyo 606 (heat problems) and the Yamaha 663.
However, after two days of pouring over the cryptic owners manual and figuring out the 2-sided remote, it is working perfectly.The sound is fantastic.The speaker auto-set up using the Audyssey mike is great, then you can just tweak the settings for your own taste.
Be warned, and this is why the 4 stars instead of 5, when the unit arrives you must assign the inputs using the on-screen menus immediately. Otherwise it does nothing at all, it doesn’t even recognize it’s own built in FM receiver until you do an imput assignment.The Owner’s Manual doesn’t give you straight forward instructions regarding this.Everything is there but not written clearly.
This unit is worth the extra bucks and if you are patient with setting it up you won’t be disappointed.

I bought this to replace a Harmon-Kardon AVR330.I loved the HK, but after getting a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player, I couldn’t live without lossless audio support, nor without HDMI switching.I first bought a Sony STR-DG820 – long story short, audio quality paled in comparison to the sound I was used to from the HK, so I returned it.
The 1909 really shines in home theater use.It has a very precise sound.Machine gun fire in the “Band of Brothers” Blu-Ray DTS-MA track sounds incredibly realistic.Audyssey Dynamic EQ is a very useful feature.I live in a condo, so I have to turn my system down at night. With dynamic EQ, I get consistent frequency response even with the 1909 set at -41 dB.End result – satisfying sound without getting a knock on my door at midnight from a neighbor who can’t sleep.Dynamic volume is more useful for TV – haven’t used it as much, but it would be very useful for someone who watches a lot of TV.All in all, I am very happy with the sound quality I’m getting.It’s probably not as warm sounding as the HK AVR330 I’m giving up, but that’s more a concern for music listening.
As others have pointed out, setup is a bit laborious, but I can’t knock a star off for that.Setup will take several hours, once.The post-setup performance will last for years.If you truly enjoy your home theater, a difficult setup shouldn’t concern you as much as buying a product that will continually leave you underwhelmed.
Reading this over, it may not sound like a rave review, but I’m incredibly happy with the performance of the AVR-1909.It switches HDMI well, it’s very easy to use (once you spend some time setting it up), and it sounds great in a home theater context – particularly with lossless Blu-Ray discs.You could go cheaper (Onkyo, Harmon-Kardon) but I wasn’t willing to risk dealing with a flawed product (both have their problems).If sound quality isn’t a concern, the Sony entry-level products (STR-DG820 et al) are fine.
If you want to have a great theater experience without spending four figures (or close to it), don’t want to deal with potential problems, and are willing to spend more than a bare-bones solution would cost, this is truly a 5 star product.It isn’t ideal for the music-oriented audiophile (still love HK’s sound for music), and it’s more expensive than an entry-level buyer needs to spend, but for a mid-level home theater enthusiast, this is perfect.
This product is far and away the best A/V receiver I looked into or have ever owned. I did research for months before I bought. It all proved fruitless as the receiver i first wanted to buy was also the best reciever. I looked at onyx and yamaha, all theother major competitors fell short in sound quality. Other reviews I read said that the remote control and the set up both take a long time to get used to and are hard to set up. I am tech savvy and i will grant that the instruction manual could have been been improved by being more concise and clear. But once I took the time to read it and get used to it. I found it rather intuitive and once it is set up it is very easy to switch setting that optimize music or movie quality. The music is crisp and clear with very bright sounds and deep controlled bass notes. I paired the system with the KEF 3005 se speaker system and have never been happier. Music is a joy to listen to with every note and a breath heard from every instrument in every genre. I am hearing notes that i have never heard before from my music. The only thing that is better than listening to music is watching a movie. I put in a DTS Bourne movie and was amazed that every detail was perfect and every aspect of watching perfect. I never thought a sounds could be as clear as my BLU-ray discs but i found that the denon makes the sound as clear as my plasma tv. Don’t be worried about the set up. the built in audio EQ function is a perfect tool to get the most out of this system.It may not look like much but it has it where it counts, and it has it in spades. Stop looking and get this one.

I kind of wanted a usb but this in my case this is better and i rather get the quality of sound over the usb option.
