I bought this router due that my previous router, an older Netgear one, was starting to drop our internet connection over our WiFi.The old router was 5-6 years old, so I thought it was about time to replace it and purchased this router.
At first, our WiFi remained stable. However, after only a few days of stability, the WiFi once again began going out.The connection would just continue to drop randomly throughout the day, and it seemed to get worse at times.
I thought perhaps it was our ISP, but after a few visits and discussing the issue with the ISP, I discovered it wasn’t the ISP.It was both of my Netgear routers.
To be sure, I did some research to find out what was going on and discovered that Netgear has had this issue for quite some time.It has to do with their firmware for their routers. After a certain version, this issue began popping up and has constantly been rearing it’s ugly head, regardless of them trying to get rid of the issue. It has been an issue for quite a few years (wasn’t one for me with the old router due that I hadn’t updated the firmware until late last year, which was right around the time the WiFi dropping issue began).I saw fixes for the issue but it involved rolling back to older versions of the firmware, which I really didn’t want to do.
In the end, I decided to get an Arris DG2470 Cable Modem, which has WiFi built into it.Suddenly, the WiFi randomly dropping issue stopped being an issue. It only confirms that Netgear has an issue still with it’s firmware to me.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice router, but for me, dealing with a constantly random WiFi connection dropping is not worth it.Perhaps if the firmware can be corrected, it would be a good router, but otherwise, it’s junk to me.
We have been using this router for about a year now with no complaints. The signal is great, quality is good, speed is good, even when storms bring down electricity it doesn’t take long to boot back up. For the price I’d definitely recommend. I even purchased a second for my parents house and they have had no complaints either. It gives you a preset password and information to register the machine and your Netgear account. It is a simple set up, this was my first time setting one up and I had no issues. Regarding signal ours reaches upstairs and out into our yard quite a ways. We also have multiple machines on it the majority of the time including TV, tablets, phones and laptops. It never slows the signal down. Overall great product.
This product does not perform as advertised. Feels a bit like a bait and switch. It clearly states in the manual and marketing literature that it supports up to 600MBPS speed while the actual hardware ports only allow 100MBPS. Feels a lot like false advertising when you are buying the device to allow for upgrading your internet lines in the future. This router will only support 100MBPS internet speeds. Very disappointed.
For a daily, albeit unprofessional user, I found this router OK. Setup was NOT intuitive, but accomplished. Attempts to change the factory setup keys to something I wished provided fruitless, so I just went with those provided. Firmware updating the router since production initially seemed to be problematic, but has since settled down and the router hasn’t lost signal again. Signal strength and speed appears to now be solely a function of the ISP. Understanding this is an older router model is incumbent on the purchaser, and its performance should be adjudged accordingly. Generally you get what you pay for, and realize you can’t put a saddle on a sow !
I would highly recommend this product to anyone that is comtiplating purchasing it.We bought this about three months ago and I admit at first i was skeptical because i bought it used. The repsose of the router was light years ahead of my old NETGEAR, the easy set up that comes in the package makes is very simple to get going. My wife was able to do this while I was at work with little understanding of how networks work. The wifi Password is printed on a label on the side of the device which is handy for anyone that stops by the house to be able to jump on the network.I currently run three tablets, two phones, two Ipods, playstation 3, Wii, and two Laptops on our network and the performance is perfect.I’ve read a few other reviews on this product and I dissagree with the users that say this router drops thier signal twice or more a day.My wife works from home, she runs an online fabric company and is never disconnected from the internet. She has not once had a dropped signal.I would suggest those expiriencing this check there ISP and possibly understand that the ISP is the issue.I will recommend this to everyone and anyone that asks me about a good router product. Not too expensive and continues to superscede my expectations every day.
Very disappointed in this router. When I first hooked it up, the download speed was unbelievably slow. I’m talking REALLY slow. After researching online, I found someone complaining of the same problem. Seems one of the default settings was the culprit. Had to go into the router settings to take care of this. After the change, the speed increased to acceptable levels. I thought, Great! Should be O.K. now. No such luck. I was experiencing periodic “drop outs” where the WiFi signal would be fine one minute, then just quit.. No explanation for this…..but just seems this router may not be the best. Also, the range of the WiFi signal left a lot to be desired. (My old Asus router could reach well into my back yard….this Netgear would not even reach all the rooms in my house. Was going to buy a WiFi signal extender, but with the “drop out” issues (now it works, now it doesn’t), I decided against investing anything more. I’ve had good routers and know how they should perform. This is definitely not one of them. Decided to return it and go back to Asus.
So, I bought this to update my aunt's aging home WiFi and she has been quite pleased with it. She says her laptop web browser loads her e-mail and websites faster and she is enjoying it. She was using a 10 year old wireless G router so this was a big improvement for her and was within her limited budget price range. In my opinion it is very nice router for the price.
Got this N300 Model WNR2000v5 and it's no good.My internet speed tested at 239.06 Mbs before adding this router and only 94.27 Lbs after inserting the N300!Called Netgear and was told it can only do 100Mbs which is false advertising if you ask me.They said if you really want 300Mbsshould buy a R7000.Can you believe it?A real arrogant position!Don't get this item and save yourself a headache!
I purchased this router over 4 years ago and it is still going strong. It has been dropped a few times and I have transferred it back and forth to my office in emergency situations. Has no problem running 100 mbps speeds on several devices. I have about 10 different computers/tablets/phones connected to it constantly along with a Smart TV and Smart home theater. I have never had any problems with this and even bought another Netgear for my office.
I normally like Netgear stuff, but this router has to be rebooted every hour or two. The hardwired connections work flawlessly, but anything connected via the radio will have to deal with constantly dropped connections.
I'm an electrical engineer with great troubleshooting skills and I've eliminated every other possibility. I'm experiencing simultaneous dropping of the wifi to two Kindle Fires, a Fire TV Stick, two Acer laptops, a Dell laptop and three Android phones. None of them are immune and they all lose their connections at the same time while the cable connected PCs keep humming along.
It's too bad, too, because it has twice the range of the Linksys router it replaced.
Should have wrote this a few years ago... purchased two of these for separate locations and both stopped working in just a little over a year.Wireless stopped working on one of them and the second stopped booting. Not recovery methods worked. Went through the "Backed by NETGEAR Lifetime Warranty" and paid shipping (!!!) for the replacement for one of them and that about 9 months later that one started losing it's mind and needed a tftp firmware reload to work again every month or so.I gave up and bought from another brand.
I spent hours on the phone with tech support trying to get this router to connect with my ISP, unfortunately the "Easy set up Genie" completely took over and would not allow me to access the web page that would have given it access to the ISP. Once Tech Support and I were able to get the ISP to communicate with the router it worked intermittently for about a week and only with my computer (although neither Tech Support nor I know what we did to get it to function, it just simply decided to play nice just not with any of my other devices (iPhone, iPad, PS3)). When I informed Netgear of this issue (not connecting to other devices) I was able to get some recommendations that instead of solving the problem caused the router to latch on to a single IP address like a rabid dog and not allow any of my devices (including my computer) to access the internet. Unfortunately since this is the second time I have endeavored to set up this piece of garbage (the first required a several week cooling off period and continuation of my Comcast service instead of the free internet provided by my apartment.. you read that right I paid for Comcast rather than deal with this device) I can no longer return this rage inducing paperweight. 10/10 would only use this device for target practice.
After trying for hours to help my father-in-law get his wireless Comcast router going, I determined that it was either broken or just a pain to setup/configure. That's when I purchased this modem. I followed the quick instructions which required me to (1) plug the wireless router into the modem, (2) wait for the green light on the wireless router, (3) search for the wireless router by performing a Wi-Fi search on my laptop, (4) select the wireless router, and (5) enter the secure password (which was conveniently provided on a sticker attached to router's packaging). I removed the sticker and affixed it to the modem for quick reference. I had everything set up in less than 10 minutes. I could have done it faster, but I was taking my time. Everything works great. I even set up a wireless Cannon printer without any issues.
Had to work through Spectrum / Time Warner modem and was never able to get to the internet.I spent hours with Spectrum Teks and tried ti get help from Netgear but they make it very difficult to contact them.the brochures are meager to say the least and the internet turnaround for guidance is 24 hours for each email. There is no guarantee that the agent will answer all of the questions in the email; my experience is one response at a time.It took 60 days, three modems from Spectrum, one wireless router, and finally one dual wireless router and modem to determine the WR was no good to me.
Easy to setup.Worked as advertised.Used it in my hotel room to connect 4-5 devices.Streamed Netflix with little buffering.I know it’s the network and not the router for speed, but did not see any bottle neck from the router.— Remy Prevost
This little thing is amazingly powerful for it's diminutive size. Fairly straightforward to set up if you use GL.iNet's quick start setup screen, but I opted for the advanced features of LEDE/OpenWRT to configure this little router as a VPN client so I can tunnel internet from my home network while on the road. The seller of these units was quick to answer a question I had and explained everything better than expected. Within minutes I was streaming video from (and accessing files on) my home network securely from hundreds of miles away. I hope this vendor continues to develop great hardware in the future that works well with open source software like OpenWRT.…— Mountaineer

It works fine for a while and then one day you wake up and the POWER LIGHT WILL START BLINKING! You do a 30-30-30 reset and follow the instructions to upgrade the firmware (using the modem to connect directly to the internet) but nothing works. The POWER LIGHT OD DEATH KEEP BLINKING. So you call NETGEAR and they say your product is not covered for phone support but they CAN FIX THE PROBLEM if you PAY $179.99 for 2 years of support. I explained how buyinga new router would be cheaper so they offered to help me for $139.99 for 1 year of support! What a racket! I never called NETGEAR before and will never call them again. This $140 router is now junk. I just bought a new router from TP-LINK and am very happy with it so far. Sorry NETGEAR but you lost a loyal customer!
I have owned this router for 4 years.Never had a problem with it.This router is capable of cable of covering a house that is approximately 2200 square feet.It has been very reliable and very fast.Currently, there is a Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, and a Google Chromecast hooked up to it.None of them have any problems streaming using this router. There is also quite a few iDevices switches: http://www.amazon.com/iDevices-Switch-Wi-Fi-HomeKit-Enabled/dp/B00U31IO3Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458940112&sr=8-2&keywords=idevices, installed that are also connected to this router.Everything has been working fine.
Received today, hooked it up.No automatic Wi-Fi connection available. Then when I finally did get some it said "limited" availability. Then I could never get online.I called their customer 24/7 service in India. Not only could I not understand them they couldn't understand me.Then I found out that my serial # was previously registered to someone else. This was a used item!!!They would not help me at all after being on hold and talking to them for an hour.I had to send them proof of purchase then they promise to call within 24 hours.Sure. Call tomorrow while I am at work. That will help. NOT!What a joke four hours of my night down the toilet. It is getting sent back right now.
I am giving this rating as a result of a truly abysmal experience with customer support. I have had the router in service for a week or so and have not issues with the router itself. I bought it to get a more robust router than the previous Netgear router I had and so far it seems to be working fine. My problem was in setting it up.
I am generally technically competent and able to get into the guts of various device's control software and get them working as I want. I had initially set the AC 1750 up and it was working normally. For some reason, it then quit connecting to any wireless devices I had in my house. I could only use the router with Ethernet cables. I tried changing various settings, but could not get it working. Since the device was new and had a 90 day support warranty, I called Netgear - bad mistake. Apparently, the main purpose of their tech support is to sell contracts for paid support .
The technician asked if he could take control of my computer and I agreed. He then proceeded to tweak the same settings on the router that I had tried earlier. He then tried updating the driver for my wireless adapter. It was up to date. He then told me (after more than an hour of poking around) that I had a problem with my wireless adapter and why didn't I pay for support so that they could fix theproblem. I told him that my adapter seemed to be working properly and that the AC 1750 could not connect to FIVE OTHER WIRELESS DEVICES and how was changing drivers on my laptop going to make all these others work. He never understood what I was saying and kept trying to get me to buy support. I asked for a supervisor.
The supervisor got on the phone and immediately gave me another pitch for paid support and that my wireless adapter needed service. In the process of talking, he finally asked if the other tech had suggested factory defaulting the AC 1750. (OK, yes, I should have thought of that and saved myself lots of pain), After the device was returned to factory default, it worked fine, connecting to all of my devices wirelessly. The supervisory tech, who still had control of my computer, opened NotePad and proceeded to lay out a sales pitch for paid tech support with "big discounts" that would cover all of my equipment for only $400!! Amazing - The router was only $180.
This was a truly shocking experience. I would expect much better from a well known name like Netgear. The first support technician was not competent and the second was barely so. Both were extremely pushy and more interested in selling me something I did not need than in helping me with my warranty support. If you are technically competent, this router is probably fine, but if you feel that you might need technical support, you should buy something else.
I was leery after reading some of the reviews here, but the Netgear R6300 router has pleased me thus far. The setup was fast and easy, and the signal is good all through my house and 1.5 acre property. I can even get a signal inside my metal (aluminum) aircraft hangar. The 5G (or AC) signal didn't provide any additional bars vs. the N signal, but did seem speedier. I particularly like the Genie software, as it made setting up four networks easy and fast. Four networks? Two home networks, one 5G only for AC(5G) compatible wireless devices, and another for legacy devices using B, G, or N. Then another two as Guest networks, split the same way. I'm more comfortable letting my kids use the internet too, because the router allows me to filter content by device - so the kiddos don't see anything they shouldn't, but the adults have full access. There are many more features I didn't use, but those I did use all seemed to work well. Easily the best $35 (used price) router on Amazon!

I came back here looking for the hardware model in getting tech support on something else and saw a lot of problem reviews.I have been running this router since March, 2010 and thought I should share my experiences with it.
First, connections have been generally quite reliable.I have connected desktop computers and printers by both CAT5 and WiFi.I have also connected a variety of smartphones, tablets, laptops game consoles and my smart TV without difficulty.OS connections have included Windows versions from XP through Win 10, iOS, Android, OSX, Nintendo's Wii/Wii U OS and whatever drives my 50" Panasonic plasma TV.
The router is located in my basement office/man-cave and the 2.4 GHz connection still reaches nearly to the street. That means through the floor, a couple of interior walls and a brick exterior wall. The 5 GHz connection is, of course, more range restricted. While it will make it through the floor and walls within the house, it is damped enough that I generally get better throughput with the 2.4 GHz connection.I typically keep the 5 GHz reserved for equipment in the basement where I can take best advantage of the speed.
As far as throughput?Ok, it's "rated" at 300/300 Mbs, but the reality is those numbers are typical bogus for ANY router. It just gives you a benchmark to compare products.Don't expect anything close in the real world where physics intervenes unless you are in line of sight at just the right distance, temperature and humidity.Depending on current conditions, my wife's laptop, with a floor and a couple of walls in between will still pull 95-100 Mbs.Prevailing conditions can push her over 100 or as low as 54, but both are unusual. My desktop, when I use wireless instead of CAT5, it will pull 150 Mbs on the 5 GHz channel, minimum. On CAT5, it screams.
As I said, though, numbers don't mean so much in real world. It's actual performance is what matters. It has had HD video streaming on the TV, heavy internet browsing with frequent WiFi printing, multiple smartphones (one running YouTube) while I was on Facetime with my tablet recording a podcast on the desktop (which was also running YouTube for clips). And lately, I've had my son adding in running CoD on the Wii U's gamepad to the mix (i.e. while watch a streamed movie and using YouTube on his iPad for a level walkthrough), often on top of some of the above.I can't complain about the performance at all.
I will note that I do have to reboot it every several months, however I do know already that the problem is almost always the cable modem rather than the router.I have found, though, that I typically get better results when I reboot both together. Some IT guys do this regularly as routine maintenance, however, I only do it when I see a persistent performance compromise. As I said, though, it is almost always related to the cable modem and most typically after Charter has an outage or service interruption. The web-based control panel does seem a bit sluggish, but it does what perform acceptably for its intended use. That's not something you should have to get into very often, if at all.
I haven't had any experience with the Genie apps or the Readyshare software, though I'm in the process up doing a variety of home computing upgrades and will likely add these features over the next couple of weeks. If I do so, I will update this review.
Overall, I've been quite satisfied with this router and will strongly consider Netgear again.
This is the third router of this model that I have used. This particular version (5) came out in 2015. The first version came out in 2010 so the architecture is somewhat dated. I purchased it again because the settings I used were 99% the same and it was moderately priced for the features it has. This version 5 unit has a few features not found in version 4 or earlier. You can setup the router to act as a VPN server for secure access to your LAN remotely(say from a laptop, tablet or smart phone.). There is a special case support for IPTV that cannot use NAT firewall. The indicator lights are somewhat different. The previous versions' connection lights stayed on solid if there was a connection. Now they flash when there is activity, including wireless activity.
I think the router itself is a decent one and setup was easy. But when we tried to obtain some support (a printer connection issue), I received back the oddest response: "It seems that the purchase date specified for this registration is beyond a reasonable "presumed shelf life" (difference between manufacture date and purchase date). To validate the product’s support entitlement, please attach a copy of your device’s proof of purchase on an email and send it to [email protected].
I ordered this on June 29, 2016, received and installed it on July 1, and received the above response less than 12 hours later. I sent them my Amazon receipt but today received another e-mail saying that since they had not heard from me, they were closing the support ticket. Now, seriously, it was in new packaging and sold as new and it seems to me that any company ought to support what it sells. Given this experience, I would recommend almost any other company BESIDES Netgear.
As an aside, I managed to solve my connectivity issues on my own, no thanks to Netgear. They may make a decent product but their support is non-existent.
The stock NetGear firmware is flaky and slow. Signal power was very poor inside my house (brick and concrete, not drywall) not being able to connect two rooms away from its location. There's no way to set the router's time and date by hand, and it tries to use NTP (Network Time Protocol) in order to fetch time from remote servers. This would be okay, however it only tries to use the hardcoded Netgear's servers (that are usualy down or broken), and there's no way to pick alternate NTP servers. The access restriction, firewall, and VPN setup were also quite limited. Five firmware upgrades since I bought it didn't improve nor solve my issues.
Fortunately, this router is compatible with DD-WRT. After reading DD-WRT's on-line documentation, I was able to replace Netgear's firmware with DD-WRT in an easy to follow, ten minutes, two-stage process. It is now faster, properly in sync with global NTP servers, and there are waaaaaaaay more features you can control. In particular, I was able too boost transmission power: not only am I able to use it anywhere in my apartment, but I can get a good signal from the ground floor (I live on the 7th. floor) also.
It is a good piece of hardware with a lousy firmware. Plan to use DD-WRT if you want to enjoy it thoroughly. If you feel that installing DD-WRT is way over your abilities, and don't have a friend nearby able to help you, don't buy it.
